Black Bean Hummus

Black Bean Hummus

I. Love. Hummus.

I’m not sure when I first started loving hummus – but it was probably around the time that the rest of the “general viewing public” did, because let’s be honest – hummus is one of those “newer to the mainstream” foods! The health benefits of the beans and natural (healthy fats) ingredients allow you to dip and spread (or spoon) to your heart’s desire (stick with veggies for the most natural/low fat options). Yes, you can buy hummus just about anywhere – but with a good food processor and such easy to find (and cost effective) ingredients, why not customize your own favorite hummus blends at home!?

Every time I make hummus I use a different combination of spices and additions (often because I don’t measure) but also because it keeps it fun! When I stumbled across this Mexican Style Hummus, I knew it was perfect for Cinco de Mayo (or anytime you are out of chick peas or just want a spicier healthy dip).

I promised you I would post my “regular hummus” one of these days – here it is! It is SO easy (and cheap, especially when you buy your raw ingredients on sale like I almost always do!)

Happy Cinco De Mayo – or whatever reason you want to make up in order to make this spicy, tasty hummus. So – whatever your reason… break out the food processor & get dipping.

Author: A Local Choice
Prep time: 15 mins
Total time: 15 mins
Ingredients
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 can black beans (rinsed – and remember, the better quality – the better taste)
  • 2 T Tahini
  • 2 T Lemon Juice
  • 2 T Olive Oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients in the food processor and blend until smooth.
  2. I have heard & found that the best way to a smooth hummus is to first emulsify your “liquids” (and spices and garlic) and once that is nice and super whipped – then you add your beans
  3. Serve with veggies or chips & enjoy this Spicy Mexican twist on your regular hummus
